"Playing with words and phrases is a habit of mine. In my studio logs, I keep long lists of odd, interesting and not-often-used words. Among them are galoot, spall, flagon, flimflam, rive, valise, rouleau, confabulation and purfle. I simply like how certain words look or sound." Marla Ziegler

"Ziegler sometimes uses no glazes at all, 'leaving the matt white bisque surface' to speak for itself . This technique - no added glazes or colors - is apparent in 'The Alchemist's Index,' where various shapes emerge from two smooth white surfaces, like images taking shape on the pages of an open book. The whole composition can be 'read' as if the imaginary alchemist had left a coded index in symbols rather than in words. "
